New Year's Greeting :)

Happy New Year Dear Scouts! 2011 has gone by in a flash and now we have entered to a new endearing year, 2012. No I'm not talking about the apocalypse or earth's collision with a black hole predicted by the Mayan Civilization, but a new school year! Tackling major exams for some and new school syllabus for others. Not forgetting a new scouting year as well. Logbooks to write, badges to complete, test to pass, sports day marching to win, skills to learn and skin to get darker.

Are you prepared?

This is another year and opportunity to accomplish many many things. Do not regret not doing the things you've always wanted to do. There is no more time to waste, so start now. Make goals and a year's planning. Many of you will not understand the reason of doing the above latter. But trust me, you will, when you realised you have let a year go by and you are hesitant and seem to have choked on your tongue when someone asks you, what are your achievement in the year before? Are there things you did that you are proud of? What did you even do? Let me tell you this, frankly its the most suckiest feeling. Period. So for this year, no regrets! Want to pass Usaha? FINISH LOGBOOK. Dream to be a king scout? wake up and WORK! Nevertheless, always have fun, work hard and play hard. *Tepuk Pengakap*

Usaha Camp 2011

Hold your breath, because we're going under..

Sincere apologies i would like to bid to everyone for the lateness of this post. Nevertheless, its here! This post would just be a simple overall report of Usaha/Solo Camp held a few weeks back. For those who missed it, pity. The feedback via facebook from participant was fantastic!

This camp was held on the 18th to the 21st November 2011 in Templer's Park, Rawang. As you can tell from the title, this years Usaha camp theme was a rather creative one. 'Dive Into Scouting'. Why you may ask? Well to be literal, it means to immerse yourself into the scouting experience. Not forgetting the adorable names of the patrol which were turtle, starfish, dolphin, lobster, shark and barnacles :) Usaha camp was a real test for all participant and certainly not for the weak hearted, for both juniors and solo campers. All campers had to endure the unpredictable and harsh weather of Malaysia. Rain, heat, storm, cyclone, sweat, (you name it!) With only the security of their raincoat to keep themselves dry and protected. No causalities were met, fortunately. None threw in the towel, instead carried on strong and semangat throughout camp. Well done guys and girls!

Many main activities were held during camp, and here they are ;

(Juniors)

Day 1, 18th November 2011
  • Chopping Bamboo
  • Building Campsite
  • Modern Cooking
  • Malam Suai Kenal
  • Operasi Burung Hantu
  • Ahli Perhubungan Test

Day 2, 19th November 2011
  • Morning exercise
  • Hike to waterfall
  • Backwoods competition

Day 3, 20th November 2011
  • Morning exercise
  • Halangan Komando YAY
  • Malam Kebudayaan YAY

Day 4, 21th November 2011
  • Tour around solo camper's campsite

Do not be fooled by the short list, in between the main activities, junior campers are still required to prepare their own meals, shower, build their camp-site, and of course what is camp without a fixed time to get screwed by our beloved scouters? Morning inspection is held every morning followed by istiadat. Do check out the photos which I have linked after each day to really see the action! Reminder, you have to be 'friends' with Miss Lihwen to be able to view the photos. Facebook policies. So addaddadd! For those who did not attend 2011 Usaha Camp, no worries it is held annually every year. So do not miss it! It will be an opportunity of a lifetime and something worth remembering for the rest of your life, trust me.

Swim my little fishies, swim!

Merdeka, Merdeka, Merdeka!

Are you proud to be a Malaysian?
We sure are.

Every year, in conjunction of the Independence day celebration on the 31th August, it has always been a tradition for our troop to build a monumental gadget in school. Its not just big, but MASSIVE. Not just complicated, but COMPLEX. It represents unity, peace, harmony, and strength. Everything Malaysia stands for. This was a significant project and it had to be perfect so planning was key. Not only because it was for Independence day, but it will also showcase the skill and quality of 73rd Petaling scouts. After weeks of brainstorming and researching for ideas, the Form 5 seniors were able to come down to an agreement with a gadget plan. And the inspiration was the Kuala Lumpur Tower.

Drum role please. I now present you, 73rd Petaling's Merdeka Tower of 2011 ..

WAHHHH,YAY *claps*

It took approximately 5 days to complete the Merdeka Gadget, and less than 4 hours to completely demolish it (I was in the brink of tears). The gadget stood about 2.5 stories high and 4 meters wide. Have you ever seen anything so beautiful? Wait just one more!

(i am not allowed to express my unhappiness here but, NO FAIR I AM NOT IN THE PICTURE)

We couldn't have pulled it off without the guidance of the scouters. And I would like to sincerely thank everyone one of the seniors for their co-operation and efforts. Love you guys!

Old news paper, paper lama, tau kau po chi..

Yessiree, that was us. 20th August, the ever so hard working scouts of 73rd Petaling started a day's service of collecting recycled items. In short, the 'paper lama man' business, just without the cool theme song as well as the lorry.

Why a recycling project you may ask?
Well besides the obvious reasons, our main goal was to raise funds for our troop. Recycling not only conserves our natural resources but save landfill space, conserves energy and reduces water pollution, air pollution and the green house gas emissions that causes global warming. What other better way to raise funds and also save our planet?! This was also an opportunity to get off the computer and get some exercise.

Sadly our services was only valid for 1 day from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm. We manage to cover an area of 1 km radius from SMK Damansara Utama, which was no sweat for everyone. Unfortunately there were no pictures taken on that day, I apologize on behalf of my poor memory. Overall it was a very successful day indeed. We would definitely be organizing another project like this in the future :)

Review ; Campfire.

On the 16th of July, 11 of our fellow scouts attended a campfire held by 10th Petaling Scout troop of SMK Sultan Abdul Samad. The theme of it was 'Medieval Havoc'. It was their 6th annual cultural night. Many schools attended that night, including SMK Sri Sentosa, SMK USJ 8 etc. The night started of with traditional dance, the dancers held small tea plates and dressed as if they were going to perform Silat. After that, each school had to their own troop roll call. Not to disappoint, 73rd Petaling screamed/roared their lungs out and was certainly very semangat. One of the highlights of the night was the watermelon eating competition. Melissa Lim and Han Wei Wen were among the 10 other participant in the competition. The watermelon was karate chopped open with their bare hands (Alright maybe not, it exploded on the floor) and they dug into the flesh of the watermelon like animals. They definitely put boys to shame. Very entertaining indeed! There were sessions for everyone to mingle and jingle around with everyone else. Numbers and facebook names were exchanged, friends were made, everyone had an exceptionally good time :) Not forgetting the exciting dance floor at the end of the night although it was slightly odd dancing in full uniform. For those who could not make it, not to worry there will be many other campfires in the future.
